The True Cost of Buying a Wood Burner Online

It is tempting to look at the low price tag of a wood burning stove on a national retail website and think you’ve found a bargain. However, a wood burner is not a standard household appliance, it is a high-temperature combustion engine for your home. Online retailers sell boxes; we sell a warm, safe, and legal home.

Buying “online-only” often leads to hidden costs that far outweigh the initial savings. From compliance failures to structural safety risks, here is why the DIY or “add to cart” approach can become an expensive mistake for homeowners in the Southwest.

The Delivery Nightmare: Kerbside vs. White Glove

Most online retailers use standard pallet couriers. This means a 200kg cast iron stove is often left on a pallet at your kerbside or in the middle of your driveway. The driver is not insured to move it into your house, let alone your fireplace.

At Woodburners Southwest, we provide a “White Glove” service. We handle the specialized transport, offloading, and positioning of your stove in a single, coordinated move. You won’t be left struggling with a heavy pallet or trying to find a local builder willing to risk moving a premium unit like a Dean Forge or Hergom Glance.

Precision kW Heat Calculation

We don’t use generic online calculators. Our surveyors measure the cubic volume of your room and evaluate your insulation levels (from new-build airtightness to thick granite walls). This ensures you get a stove that provides the perfect amount of heat, avoiding the soot buildup of an oversized unit or the disappointment of one that is too small.

Chimney and Flue Health Check

We inspect your existing chimney to determine if it requires a 316 or 904 grade liner. We check for structural integrity, potential blockages, and ensure the terminal (pot) is at the correct height to provide the necessary “pull” for a clean burn.

Compliance and Safety Verification

Our HETAS-trained surveyors verify that your hearth meets Document J building regulations. We measure the “distance to combustibles” for wooden mantels and furniture, ensuring your installation is 100% legal and safe for your family.

What to Expect During Your Survey

A typical survey takes approximately 30 to 45 minutes. To get the most out of our visit, it is helpful if you have a general idea of the brands you like, such as Dean Forge, Hergom, or Termatech.

  1. Fireplace Inspection: We measure the internal opening to ensure your chosen stove will fit with the required air gaps.
  2. Access Assessment: We plan the “White Glove” delivery route to ensure your heavy cast iron stove can be moved safely into position.
  3. Ventilation Check: We determine if your property requires a Direct Air Kit or additional room ventilation to meet modern safety standards.
  4. Photo Documentation: We take reference photos to help our installation team prepare the exact materials needed for your specific job.

FAQs About Our Home Surveys

Do I need to be home for the survey?

Yes. We need access to the room where the stove will be installed and, in some cases, access to your loft or roof area to inspect the chimney stack.

We provide a professional, in-depth technical assessment. Please contact us to confirm the survey fee for your specific location in Devon or Cornwall; this fee is often fully refundable against the cost of your final installation.

Following the survey, you will receive a detailed, fixed-price quotation within 48 hours. This includes the stove, all flue components, labor, and the final HETAS certification.
